Pharmacy Technician

Main Purpose of Role

To support the pharmacist and dispensary team with the safe, accurate, and efficient running of the dispensary and pharmacy. The pharmacy technician assists with prescription processing, stock management, administration, customer service, and pharmacy procedures within the limits of the role and under pharmacist supervision where required.

Key Duties

Dispensary Support

● Receive prescriptions and process them accurately in the dispensing system.
● Collect and confirm patient details, prescription information, payment details, and other required information.
● Prepare prescriptions for pharmacist checking in accordance with pharmacy procedures.
● Assist with labelling, counting, packing, and organising medicines.
● Support repeats, owing medicines, ordering, and prescription filing as instructed.
● Ask for or record child weight for children under 13 where required by pharmacy procedure.
● Refer all clinical, medicine, prescription, symptom, health, or treatment questions to the pharmacist.
● Avoid giving medicine or treatment advice unless authorised and within scope.

SOPs, Compliance, and Safety

● Follow all pharmacy SOPs, policies, procedures, and pharmacist instructions.
● Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
● Follow procedures for dispensing workflow, stock handling, cold chain, controlled drugs, incident reporting, health and safety, and document management where relevant.
● Report errors, near misses, hazards, complaints, damaged stock, or unusual issues to the pharmacist or manager.
● Ensure work is completed carefully, accurately, and within the limits of the pharmacy technician role.

Stock and Inventory

● Assist with ordering, receiving, checking, and putting away stock.
● Check invoices, packing slips, credits, and stock discrepancies as instructed.
● Assist with stock rotation and expiry date checks.
● Maintain tidy and organised dispensary stock areas.
● Assist with supplier deliveries, back orders, recalls, and stock returns where required.

Customer Service

● Welcome customers and provide friendly, polite, and professional service.
● Assist customers with prescription drop-off, collection, and general pharmacy processes.
● Refer medicine, prescription, symptom, health, or clinical questions to the pharmacist.
● Handle customer enquiries professionally and escalate complaints where needed.
● Support a friendly, community-focused pharmacy environment.

Administration

● Assist with phone calls, emails, filing, printing, scanning, forms, and general paperwork.
● Maintain prescription records and pharmacy documents as instructed.
● Assist with labels, patient forms, delivery records, stock records, and other dispensary or admin processes.
● Support preparation of blister packs, compliance packs, or other medicine management systems if trained and authorised.

Cleaning and Presentation

● Keep the dispensary, counters, shelves, workspaces, and staff areas clean, tidy, and professional.
● Assist with cleaning and organisation of dispensary equipment and work areas.
● Report maintenance issues, hazards, or damaged stock.
● Help maintain a safe, organised, and professional pharmacy environment.

Deliveries and Errands

● Assist with local deliveries, errands, or stock movement where required and agreed.
● Follow pharmacy privacy and delivery procedures at all times.
● Handle customer, patient, and medicine items carefully and confidentially.

Required Skills and Attributes

● Pharmacy technician qualification or relevant pharmacy experience preferred.
● Good attention to detail and accuracy.
● Friendly and professional communication.

● Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
● Ability to follow SOPs, pharmacy procedures, and legal requirements.
