Pharmacist

Main Purpose of Role

To provide safe, professional, and patient-centred pharmacy services, including dispensing, clinical advice, vaccinations and professional services where authorised. The pharmacist supports the smooth running of the pharmacy, supervises dispensary and retail activities where required, and ensures all work is completed in accordance with legal, professional, ethical, and pharmacy SOP requirements.

Key Duties

Dispensing and Clinical Care

● Dispense prescriptions accurately and safely.
● Check prescriptions for legality, appropriateness, interactions, allergies, dosing, and patient safety.
● Provide counselling and advice to patients on medicines, health conditions, and treatment options.
● Ensure all clinical and medicine-related decisions are made within professional scope and competence.
● Refer patients to another healthcare provider where appropriate.
● Maintain accurate dispensing records and documentation.
● Support safe supply of pharmacist-only, pharmacy-only, and restricted medicines.

Professional Services

● Provide pharmacy services where trained and authorised, such as vaccinations, medicine consultations, minor ailment services, emergency contraception, UTI services, sildenafil services, B12 injections, or other approved pharmacy services.
● Complete service documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
● Follow all relevant standing orders, protocols, SOPs, consent requirements, and professional guidelines.
● Maintain current training, competence, and certification for any services provided.

SOPs, Compliance, and Professional Standards

● Follow all pharmacy SOPs, policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
● Ensure safe handling, storage, and supply of medicines.
● Support cold chain, controlled drug, privacy, health and safety, and quality assurance procedures.
● Identify, report, and document incidents, near misses, errors, hazards, or complaints as required.
● Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
● Ensure professional and ethical standards are upheld in all areas of practice.

Supervision and Team Support

● Support and guide pharmacy technicians, retail staff, interns, students, and other team members within their scope of role.
● Ensure clinical, prescription, medicine, and health-related queries are handled by an appropriate pharmacist.
● Provide clear instructions and support to team members.
● Help maintain a calm, respectful, and professional working environment.

Customer Service and Community Care

● Provide friendly, respectful, and professional service to customers and patients.
● Support a welcoming, community-focused pharmacy environment.
● Handle customer concerns professionally and escalate or document complaints where required.
● Promote health literacy and support patients to understand their medicines and treatment.

Stock, Retail, and Pharmacy Operations

● Support ordering, receiving, checking, and managing medicine and retail stock where required.
● Assist with stock control, expiry checks, recalls, supplier issues, and stock discrepancies.
● Support dispensary organisation and workflow.
● Assist with pharmacy opening, closing, cleaning, and general operational duties as required.
